Many of you collect quotes like I do. Here are a few conversation starters. Tell me which quote speaks to you personally:
“A writer’s job is to tell the truth.” ~ Andy Rooney
“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” ~ Sylvia Plath
“In utter loneliness a writer tries to explain the inexplicable.” ~ John Steinbeck
“No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.” ~ Robert Frost
“Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind is written large in his works.” ~ Virginia Woolf
“The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say.” ~ Anais Nin
“The writer can choose what he writes about but he cannot choose what he is able to make live.” ~ Flannery O’Connor

“The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say.” ~ Anais Nin is my favorite. It may be one of the reasons I like cards as much as I do.
Denise, that quote was one of my favorites, too
“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” ~ Sylvia Plath — “self-doubt” always kicks my behind…man, come on Leti
) — Thanks again, Vicki for the wonderful thought provoking posts. Hugs.
Leti, good quote. I say write anyway – you’ll be surprised what happens
It would have to be the quote by Virginia Woolfe. Many times I can only share myself through my writing. Keeping you and your family continually in prayer. Now that you are back here writing you are inspiring me to get back to my blog.
Danielle, that’s a great quote, isn’t it? Thanks for those prayers. I love your blog!
I agree with Danielle. I like the Virginia Woolf quote the best. How true!
Great quote, Jean. Thanks for visiting. ♥
“The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say.” ~ Anais Nin
This one stands out, though I must say I loved all the quotes you shared here.
I have not been to this blog, Vicki, I tried to access your old one Windows to the Soul… as the Lord has brought you to mind these past days, and finally this early morning (3 a.m.) I woke up with you on my heart… so I went to the Sisterhood blog to find you. Glad I did.
Sending this note together with a prayer in my heart for you.
Love
Lidia
Lidia, so nice to see you here. I deactivated ‘Windows to My Soul’ since I’m no longer blogging there. Wanted to go thru my archives (for the longest time, I had both blogs going). Appreciate your kind words and prayers. Hugs, V.
I think I like this one best…“In utter loneliness a writer tries to explain the inexplicable.” ~ John Steinbeck
this has been my experience..in my VERY limited experience…but I get the most feed back when I am actually ABLE to do this…only by God’s grace…cause I’m no writer…;)
Hey Jada’s Gigi ~ thank you. That one resonated with me, too.
Because I keep coming back lately to why it is so hard to be honest in my writing, just my own journaling, I liked:
“A writer’s job is to tell the truth.” ~ Andy Rooney
Like you said in a recent post, why do we need to sanitize everything? Why am I so afraid to write it out; to trust no one may ever read it, but, even if they did, would it change their perception of me? Would it change my perception of me? Who am I fooling, really?
Thanks for sharing your heart. It always inspires me and challenges me.
Tina, that quote spoke to me, too. The writers I’ve admired over the years are usually the ones who took risks-in-telling. Telling the truth in journaling is especially important if we expect to process and heal. Seems like we all need to heal from something. Hey, Tina, if we could lock our journals in safe-keeping, would that help?
Just wondering out loud…♥
Vicki, you’re on my heart as I’m reading S. D. Gordon’s Quiet Talks on John’s Gospel (can be downloaded free from Project Gutenberg). Our very purpose to let God’s love shine through us demands our transparency.
“You and I are meant to be the human lanterns carrying the Light, and letting it shine clearly fully out. And you know when some one else is providing the light the chief thing about the lantern is that the glass of the lantern be kept clean and clear so the light within can get freely out. The great thing is that we shall live clean transparent lives so the Light within may shine clearly out. We may live unselfish clean Christly lives, by His great grace. And through that kind of lives, the Light itself shines out, and shines out most, and most clearly.”
No transparency, no light; a little transparency, a little light. Why would we want any less for others than the whole Light? Why would we want any less for ourselves than the whole Light?
Grace, I believe, is the glass cleaner. Why or why is it so hard to receive?
(Lock those journals? Sounds like a plan, friend!)
Let’s lock the journals and let them have their work on our spirits then let the glass cleaner do its job and inspire us to share with the world in our writing our journey. There’s hope. There’s a plan.
Bless you my friend!
Hugs, Tina
Tina, I read this when you first posted it but thought I’d already commented. Great stuff. I appreciate everything you share with me.
